Career Cruising approached us to help them tackle the challenge of introducing the word “career” and core “career concepts” to a group of 4 to 7 year olds.
Better yet, they asked us how we could create something to compete with the plethora of attention-grabbing toys, games, TV shows, and extra-curricular activities (not to mention nap times and meal times).
During this process we embarked on a great deal of research around children, the games they played, the devices they used most often, and about some of the learning objectives outlined by academic curriculum as it relates to career information in those grades.
We also did workshops with Kindergarten students to better understand and gain valuable feedback on the jobs and careers and what they were most interested in.
After much ideation and concepting, we arrived at Career Town, filled with interesting, fun, and educational career-specific locations with characters that work in different fields.
Each location was accompanied with unique tasks and mini-games that the children could play. We tied the game around an action-packed story penned by Bruce Robb, a notable children’s story writer who has written for shows like the award-winning Caillou.
The feedback from educators, kids, parents, and Career Cruising has been overwhelmingly positive.
As technology has evolved, we’ve been able to update the app to keep it accessible on the devices being used on the classroom, most recently adding support for Chromebooks.
